Tim Tebow Inspired Me In My Engineering Career and He Can Do the Same For You

For those of you not familiar with Tim Tebow, he is currently the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos, a team in the National Football League (NFL).  However, at the core, he is much more than that and I wanted to share his story with you as I think it will help you look at your skills and your engineering career from a different perspective.  Tim was born in the Philippines to American parents who were serving as Christian Baptist missionaries at the time.  His mother had complications when pregnant with him and almost lost the pregnancy four times.  In fact, it was recommended to her that she have an abortion by her doctor, but she didn’t.

Tim was homeschooled and a change in the law when he was a young teenager permitted homeschooled children in Florida to play high school sports, which they previously weren’t allowed to do.  People told him because of his size and skill level he would never be a good football player.  Tim went on to become one of the best Florida high school football players ever.  He then attended the University of Florida where the experts again questioned his talents.  As quarterback at Florida, he went on to win a national championship, the Heisman Trophy, and became one of the best collegiate quarterbacks ever to play the game.  Tim was then told he would never be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft, and guess what happened.  The Denver Broncos selected Tim in the first round of the 2010 draft.  Tim didn’t play much during his first season, however this year, earlier on in the season the Broncos starting quarterback struggled and the fans were calling for Tebow.  Contrary to what all of the experts advised, the Broncos coaching staff promoted Tim to starting quarterback.  Since that time, the Broncos have [Read more...]

A Day in the Life of an Engineer – The Decisions We Make

Throughout the course of a day, we as engineers are faced with one decision after the next, all of which impact the advancement and growth of both our companies and ourselves.  These decisions might include:

Should I take a review course to prepare for the P.E. exam?

Do I attend this project meeting or do I send someone else?

Do I call the client and ask them for money that is owed or do I be thankful that I have a client and keep moving forward?

Do we cut our price on this proposal at the risk of losing money to get the job?

Should I get my LEED accreditation?

Should we pursue clients that we know are notoriously slow payers?

Do I attend a networking event or go home and have dinner with my family? [Read more...]

Go For It in Your Career!

Featured Guest Blogger: William Merunka

Like the stock market, careers are full of ups and downs. During the up phase, we tend to celebrate and our happiness can be seen by those around us. Although the praise and recognition may not be our purpose for doing something, we enjoy the positive attention we may receive, even if we keep it to ourselves and don’t express it externally.

When our career is in the down phase, the whole world knows about it and we search for excuses as to why it didn’t go as we wanted it to. While the real reason can usually be found by evaluating things we did and didn’t do in our personal actions, the easier path, that we often take, is pushing the blame on other people and making excuses.

When speaking about career development, there should not be any excuses. Either we took the necessary steps to get from A to Z, or we didn’t. Bob can not put an end to your career. He may try to spread rumors about you, or steal clients from you, but he does not have the power to end your career.

While it may be hard to admit to ourselves that we are the cause of our failure, we need to be realistic and take a good look at our actions. It is important to realize, that you are not alone and this is something that happens to many people. Even some of the most successful people in the world had to deal with setbacks before becoming very successful. It’s the lessons that we learn from the failures that help us grow and become greater people.

There are a wide variety of reasons why we do not achieve the career success that we desire. If you can determine what is truly holding back in your career, you can work to overcome it. In this article, I will talk about a few of the more common obstacles that slow down or halt career development. [Read more...]

Goal Setting: Start With Your Values

Goal SettingThe following is an excerpt from Chapter 1 of my soon to be launched book Engineer Your Own Success: 7 Key Elements to Creating an Extraordinary Engineering Career:

An important first step in setting goals is taking a good look at your values. These are defined in the dictionary as a principle, standard, or quality considered worthwhile or desirable.

What are your principles? What are your standards? What are your values? Take a notepad and paper and make a list of everything you value in your life.

Your values might include your family, friends, honesty, and integrity among others. This is a very important first step to goal-setting because your values will act as the foundation for achieving your goals. [Read more...]

Going through life is an adventure that has plenty of ups and downs. Like a roller coaster, when everything seems calm and relaxing, your world is suddenly turned upside down at a moment’s notice. While some people see these rough patches as an adrenaline rush and go after them with full force, others are not so rugged, and become flustered because things did not go as planned and they have no clue how to react to the situation.

Even the greatest leaders have their world turned upside down occasionally. They key to success is not how smooth you can make the adventure, it’s how well you can overcome adversity and challenges. With a strong motivating factor, you will be able to overcome many of life’s hardships. Without motivation, you will find yourself continuously caving in and being more susceptible to further hardships. Just because you are motivated, it does not mean that you will hit a minimal amount of roadblocks and overcome every single one of them. It means that you will be ready to go toe-to-toe with the obstacle and be prepared to overcome it easier.

Some people look like they are always positive, and others look like they are constantly struggling to find their motivation. Motivation can be found in many different places, and varies from person to person. Here are a few places that you can looki for motivation. [Read more...]

Are You Holding Yourself Accountable In Your Career?

Anthony Fasano

My wife and I had a dinner party this past weekend and it made me realize once again how important accountability is in achieving your goals. In the weeks leading up to the dinner party my wife and I did so many things around the house that we have been wanting to do for years like spackling, painting, buying new lamps, curtains, and rugs. It’s amazing how many things you can actually get done when you give yourself a deadline to meet.

This is something that professionals just don’t do enough in their career. For example it’s amazing how many professionals procrastinate in registering for professional exams (i.e. the P.E. exam), but once they do, they study like crazy to pass the exam. It’s unfortunate, but sometimes we need the urgency of deadlines to move forward. How about creating accountability for yourself in other areas of your career such as achieving a certain position in your company or achieving a certain salary? Successful professionals regularly implement deadlines into their routine to hold themselves accountable.

Here are some strategies that you can use to start holding yourself accountable: [Read more...]

Blueprint of a Goal

Matt Leedham

My name is Matt Leedham and I am a married, Yankee-loving, marathon-running, dog-owning, native New Jerseyean, who is currently a Washington DC resident, that is passionately driven to help others achieve their goals. In my dream to change the world by building a community of achievers, I co-founded Velocity Goals with my good friend and former business partner, Jaime Willis. I also work extensively with entrepreneurs across the U.S. on strategic planning, goal setting, and experience sharing at the Entrepreneurs’ Organization.

Knowing my audience here of engineers, I am taking a more technical approach to successful goal setting (if you want more of this content plus the feel-good, motivational, positivity stuff, please visit our blog). These techniques are proven best practices that many successful achievers use to do great things. You can use these tactics to set personal goals, particularly New Year’s resolutions, and increase your chances of achievement.

Disclaimer: This is not for the faint of heart! This is for those that want to do meaningful, purposeful things in their lives. For those that want to live with intention. Following these steps will be thought provoking and require you to be introspective. You can do it! [Read more...]
