For those of you not familiar with Tim Tebow, he is currently the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos, a team in the National Football League (NFL). However, at the core, he is much more than that and I wanted to share his story with you as I think it will help you look at your skills and your engineering career from a different perspective. Tim was born in the Philippines to American parents who were serving as Christian Baptist missionaries at the time. His mother had complications when pregnant with him and almost lost the pregnancy four times. In fact, it was recommended to her that she have an abortion by her doctor, but she didn’t.

Tim was homeschooled and a change in the law when he was a young teenager permitted homeschooled children in Florida to play high school sports, which they previously weren’t allowed to do. People told him because of his size and skill level he would never be a good football player. Tim went on to become one of the best Florida high school football players ever. He then attended the University of Florida where the experts again questioned his talents. As quarterback at Florida, he went on to win a national championship, the Heisman Trophy, and became one of the best collegiate quarterbacks ever to play the game. Tim was then told he would never be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft, and guess what happened. The Denver Broncos selected Tim in the first round of the 2010 draft. Tim didn’t play much during his first season, however this year, earlier on in the season the Broncos starting quarterback struggled and the fans were calling for Tebow. Contrary to what all of the experts advised, the Broncos coaching staff promoted Tim to starting quarterback. Since that time, the Broncos have won 6 of their 7 games and many of the games ended with Tim leading the team down field to victory in the last few minutes of the game. Tim has energized the team, the organization and an entire city! Feel free to watch this video with Tim’s story or read about it on Wikipedia.

When Tim was initially installed as the starting quarterback two months ago, many of the experts had been saying that Tim Tebow won’t last as a quarterback in the NFL or at least as a successful one, yet as I mentioned above, in his first seven games this year the team is 6 and 1 and they are in first place in their division. Now, all of the experts are calling him a winner, but many of them are still saying that he won’t last. They are repeatedly referring to him as a winner though, and they keep saying he just knows how to win. For those of you non-football fans out there, the reason the experts say Tebow won’t last is because he plays a very unorthodox style of quarterback. Rather than being able to throw the ball well like most professional quarterbacks, Tim runs extremely well and fits into an offense that you would typically see in college football not at the professional level.

While people keep calling him a winner, I think there’s a lot more to him than that. In my eyes what makes Tim Tebow special is that he has always believed in himself and those around him, in this case his teammates. He believes in his skills and he continuously tries to improve them. Rather than trying to play a style of football that isn’t in alignment with his strengths, he continues to do what he does best. What’s even more impressive is that his coach has now adapted the entire offense around him.

Tim is also a devout Christian and often expresses his religious beliefs both through verbal and physical actions on the field, which has also subjected Tim to a lot of negative criticism. That doesn’t bother Tim though; in fact nothing seems to bother this man. He knows what his priorities and goals are in his life. He believes in himself and those around him and he uses the gifts that he has to succeed. We can all learn from Tim in our engineering career. You may not be the best technical engineer, so maybe you go the management route early on in your career like I did. Even though a larger company may pay a higher salary, you might take a position with a smaller firm, because you think the role will better fit your personality and be more aligned with your goals. Maybe you convince one of your staff members to use their creative talent, which they are suffocating because they are afraid it won’t be accepted in the analytical engineering world.

Many people told me when I decided to transition from a design engineer to career coaching for engineers that I shouldn’t give up my engineering career. They said you have a family and your engineering career would allow you to support them. Some people even said it was selfish. Thankfully, like Tim Tebow, I believed in myself and I now through my daily boosts, coaching and speaking, I impact the careers of engineers all over the world on a daily basis and I am having a blast doing it and I will continue to draw inspiration from people like my wife, my engineering and coaching colleagues and Tim Tebow who inspire me daily.

My point with this post is very simple: people aren’t always going to support you in your engineering career or in life for one reason or the other, but that doesn’t mean you should listen to them and compromise your dreams and goals. If you do something a little different than most people, consider yourself unique and stay true to yourself and I believe that you will create an extraordinary engineering career and life.

I would love to hear your take on Tim Tebow or on how you have stayed true to yourself on your career path when others were pushing you in a different direction.

To Your Success,

The above is a video that I prepared based on two questions that I received on our facebook fanpage.

1 – What are the options for an average civil engineering student when they graduate?

2 – I am interested in a career as a CADD pro or CADD engineer, what are my options?

There are many different career path options for civil engineering students such as:

Residential and commercial layout and design which includes stormwater analysis and land grading,

Transportation which would include highway design,

Structural engineering which includes the design of components for buildings, bridges and other structures,

Geotechnical engineering which consists of soil investigation and foundation design,

Environmental engineering which ranges from sanitary design to remediation projects.

For more information on civil engineering visit Wikipedia.

As far as CADD goes, what I can tell you is that in today’s world engineers are expected, right out of school, to be able to use AutoCAD. A younger engineer today typically does both the design and the CAD drafting right on the computer. The days of having someone design a project and someone else draft it are long gone!

I hope this video answers your questions. Be sure to post your questions our facebook fanpage and I’ll try to answer them as soon as possible.

Throughout the course of a day, we as engineers are faced with one decision after the next, all of which impact the advancement and growth of both our companies and ourselves. These decisions might include:

Should I take a review course to prepare for the P.E. exam?

Do I attend this project meeting or do I send someone else?

Do I call the client and ask them for money that is owed or do I be thankful that I have a client and keep moving forward?

Do we cut our price on this proposal at the risk of losing money to get the job?

Should I get my LEED accreditation?

Should we pursue clients that we know are notoriously slow payers?

Do I attend a networking event or go home and have dinner with my family?

Do I volunteer for a leadership position in my local professional society?

Should I attempt to find a mentor?

Should I become a mentor for someone?

Do I want to spend more time on technical tasks or do I want to move into management?

Should I get a master’s degree in engineering or a master’s in business administration?

I urge you to consider all of the consequences of each decision you make, considering the potential results for each course of action. Most importantly, consider which decision is more in alignment with your goals and/or your company’s goals. For example, if one of your career goals is to stay involved with technical tasks then you wouldn’t want to pursue an MBA. If one of your goals is to be a partner in your firm, and a requirement of partners is to bring in new business, then attending networking events and getting involved with professional societies would be a great career move.

This sounds simplistic, but many professionals spend so much time and energy on tasks that are not going to get them to where they want to go.

How do you approach your decisions? Do you consider your goals during the decision making process?

Like the stock market, careers are full of ups and downs. During the up phase, we tend to celebrate and our happiness can be seen by those around us. Although the praise and recognition may not be our purpose for doing something, we enjoy the positive attention we may receive, even if we keep it to ourselves and don’t express it externally.

When our career is in the down phase, the whole world knows about it and we search for excuses as to why it didn’t go as we wanted it to. While the real reason can usually be found by evaluating things we did and didn’t do in our personal actions, the easier path, that we often take, is pushing the blame on other people and making excuses.

When speaking about career development, there should not be any excuses. Either we took the necessary steps to get from A to Z, or we didn’t. Bob can not put an end to your career. He may try to spread rumors about you, or steal clients from you, but he does not have the power to end your career.

While it may be hard to admit to ourselves that we are the cause of our failure, we need to be realistic and take a good look at our actions. It is important to realize, that you are not alone and this is something that happens to many people. Even some of the most successful people in the world had to deal with setbacks before becoming very successful. It’s the lessons that we learn from the failures that help us grow and become greater people.

There are a wide variety of reasons why we do not achieve the career success that we desire. If you can determine what is truly holding back in your career, you can work to overcome it. In this article, I will talk about a few of the more common obstacles that slow down or halt career development.

One of the reasons that our career goes stagnant is the safety blanket that we keep. Whether in your personal life, or professional life, we tend to get to a point where we are able to provide for our families, and spend time with our friends, and then we slow down on career development. We feel as if things could be better, but at the same time things are good enough where we have an acceptable work-play balance. I like to call this our safety blanket. While we may want more out of our career, if we are in this position where we feel safe and secure, our goals and wants are moved to the back burner and we work on them leisurely as opposed to tackling them head-on. Working on goals leisurely, is not going to get you where you want to be, when you want to be there. You need to go full speed and dedicate yourself to achieving the goals. If you wait too long, the computer software or topic knowledge that once made you a strong asset is now something that is standard for everybody in the industry to know and you loose that advantage. It may be heard to leave the safety blanket, but it is something that has to be done.

Another reason is fear of the obligations and sacrifices that may be required. Your career will not be handed to you on a silver platter; it will take hard work and sacrifices to get the end results that you want. This may mean volunteering for overtime to increase your project knowledge and experience or even paying for formal training and classes outside of normal working hours. There is a good chance that these sacrifices will put a strain on your personal life due to additional money you may need to spend as well as missing out on quality family time. You need to remember, that in order to get where you want to be in the future, it will take sacrifices and hard work along the way. To help ease the strain at home, talk to your loved ones about what you want to achieve and how the sacrifices will help make things better. If they are not aware of your desires, or understand how you missing your child’s first home run, or first time winning a baseball game could help them in the long run, it will just add unnecessary stress to the equation. Instead of trying to put out the fires along the way, talk to them up front about the sacrifices that will need to be made and come to agreement on these. For example, if you usually work long hours in the office, make an agreement where one night a week you would come home at your regular time, and that night is dedicated to doing things together, maybe go to the park, or play board games. The worse thing you can do is push your loved ones aside while you work on your career.

Everybody has dreams about where they want to take their career, and what they want to achieve. Sometimes those dreams seem like they will only come true in a fantasy world. However, that is wrong. No matter how crazy a dream may seem, if you work hard, and put the necessary time and energy into it, you will succeed. The only person that can stop you from achieving your dream is yourself. We can not let ourselves make excuses for why we don’t do something and why we don’t reach our desired outcomes. Excuses will not get us anywhere; it will only make yourself look bad because you are pushing off the blame instead of being accountable for your own actions.

So what is it that you really want? Whatever it may be, make it one of your highest daily priorities and go for it. You will be amazed at how much you can achieve when you dedicate yourself to achieving your goals.

An important first step in setting goals is taking a good look at your values. These are defined in the dictionary as a principle, standard, or quality considered worthwhile or desirable.

What are your principles? What are your standards? What are your values? Take a notepad and paper and make a list of everything you value in your life.

Your values might include your family, friends, honesty, and integrity among others. This is a very important first step to goal-setting because your values will act as the foundation for achieving your goals.

Don’t take this step lightly. You know as an engineer how important a solid foundation is to any structure. Values are your foundation. Know them and live by them, as they will guide you in your journey, both personal and professional.

The rest of Chapter 1 will guide you through setting your goals and preparing a plan of attack to achieve them!

Follow me on my journey to become a great engineer.

Let’s connect on LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/williammerunka

Going through life is an adventure that has plenty of ups and downs. Like a roller coaster, when everything seems calm and relaxing, your world is suddenly turned upside down at a moment’s notice. While some people see these rough patches as an adrenaline rush and go after them with full force, others are not so rugged, and become flustered because things did not go as planned and they have no clue how to react to the situation.

Even the greatest leaders have their world turned upside down occasionally. They key to success is not how smooth you can make the adventure, it’s how well you can overcome adversity and challenges. With a strong motivating factor, you will be able to overcome many of life’s hardships. Without motivation, you will find yourself continuously caving in and being more susceptible to further hardships. Just because you are motivated, it does not mean that you will hit a minimal amount of roadblocks and overcome every single one of them. It means that you will be ready to go toe-to-toe with the obstacle and be prepared to overcome it easier.

Some people look like they are always positive, and others look like they are constantly struggling to find their motivation. Motivation can be found in many different places, and varies from person to person. Here are a few places that you can looki for motivation.

Loved Ones: It is important to realize that some of our actions and decisions will affect other people around us such as our family members, children, and significant other. Some decisions can be positive for everybody, and some decisions hurt all of the loved ones around you. For example, while you may think it is better to fire the regional sales rep that has been slacking off and losing all of the companies major clients and do the duties yourself, your family may not see your decision as so valuable. While taking on the new role may help you ensure the company stays profitable, it may cause you to miss out on all of the important games and school events for your children. Another possible downfall is having to do extensive travelling. Will you allow work to pull you away from your family 75% of the time? Your bosses may love you for it, but your family may hate it and feel like they are being pushed away. It is important that you think about everybody who will be affected.

Colleagues: Is there anybody in your office that has achieved what you are looking for? Instead of just daydreaming about being in their shoes one day, talk to them about it. How did they get where they are? What are some obstacles that they faced that you are likely to also face? Although you may not realize it, they are an invaluable asset to you and your career. You should talk with them and learn as much from them as you can while you have the opportunity. Before you know it, they will move on, and you will have lost your chance to learn from their personal experiences.

Written Word: One of the biggest motivation sources is the written word. This can be a published magazine, religious books, leadership development books, novels, poems, or even music. While you may not think to turn to music, you may be missing some priceless information. The next time you listen to music, focus on the words and their meaning instead of just singing-along and bopping your head to the beat. Although it may be hard to believe for some people, one of the artists that I recently found to be motivational is Miley Cyrus. Based on her recent wild behavior, which is the complete opposite of the way Hannah Montana was portrayed, some people are quick to discredit her as a role model.

While her actions may be seen as inappropriate, it is the words of her music that spark the inner fire in me. One song in particular is The Climb. The song is almost a perfect description of everything we go though in order to reach our goals. Below are the lyrics so you can read them yourself without getting distracted by the rhythm and the music:

I can almost see it

That dream I am dreaming

But there’s a voice inside my head saying

“You’ll never reach it”

Every step I’m taking

Every move I make feels

Lost with no direction

My faith is shaking

But I gotta keep trying

Gotta keep my head held high

There’s always gonna be another mountain

I’m always gonna wanna make it move

Always gonna be a uphill battle

Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose

Ain’t about how fast I get there

Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side

It’s the climb

The struggles I’m facing

The chances I’m taking

Sometimes might knock me down

But no, I’m not breaking

I may not know it

But these are the moments that

I’m gonna remember most, yeah

Just gotta keep going

And I, I got to be strong

Just keep pushing on

‘Cause there’s always gonna be another mountain

I’m always gonna wanna make it move

Always gonna be a uphill battle

Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose

Ain’t about how fast I get there

Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side

It’s the climb, yeah!

There’s always gonna be another mountain

I’m always gonna wanna make it move

Always gonna be an uphill battle

Somebody’s gonna have to lose

Ain’t about how fast I get there

Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side

It’s the climb, yeah!

Keep on moving, keep climbing

Keep the faith, baby

It’s all about, it’s all about the climb

Keep the faith, keep your faith, whoa

Where do you find your motivation? Are there any songs or poems that you turn to for motivation? Remember, there are no wrong answers. What may seem silly and non-motivational to one person could be perfect for a different person.

Anthony Fasano

My wife and I had a dinner party this past weekend and it made me realize once again how important accountability is in achieving your goals. In the weeks leading up to the dinner party my wife and I did so many things around the house that we have been wanting to do for years like spackling, painting, buying new lamps, curtains, and rugs. It’s amazing how many things you can actually get done when you give yourself a deadline to meet.

This is something that professionals just don’t do enough in their career. For example it’s amazing how many professionals procrastinate in registering for professional exams (i.e. the P.E. exam), but once they do, they study like crazy to pass the exam. It’s unfortunate, but sometimes we need the urgency of deadlines to move forward. How about creating accountability for yourself in other areas of your career such as achieving a certain position in your company or achieving a certain salary? Successful professionals regularly implement deadlines into their routine to hold themselves accountable.

Here are some strategies that you can use to start holding yourself accountable:

1. Tell other people (co-workers, supervisors and clients) what you plan on doing in your career. For example, tell your boss that you are currently studying for the P.E. exam, which you will take in April. By doing this, you are committing to someone other than yourself, which will introduce accountability and prompt you to work harder to achieve your goal. It’s one thing to let yourself down, but we tend to be much more fearful of letting others down.

2. Schedule action items on your calendar even if they are not physical meetings. Many professionals don’t like to add items to their calendar other than meetings. My calendar is filled with deadlines for tasks or goals that I want to achieve. This helps to hold you accountable by creating that urgency that I mentioned above. It also allows you to work efficiently because you can see, based on the other items on your calendar, how much time you can spend on each task or goal.

3. Write down all of the things that may happen if you meet your deadline and all of the things that may or may not happen if you don’t. You can use this list as motivation in meeting your deadlines, as we all know sometimes self-imposed deadlines don’t feel as urgent as deadlines such as exam dates.

I hope this post will inspire you to start being more accountable in your career and ultimately help you to achieve your goals, sooner rather than later!

Please share some of the ways you have held yourself accountable in your career…

My name is Matt Leedham and I am a married, Yankee-loving, marathon-running, dog-owning, native New Jerseyean, who is currently a Washington DC resident, that is passionately driven to help others achieve their goals. In my dream to change the world by building a community of achievers, I co-founded Velocity Goals with my good friend and former business partner, Jaime Willis. I also work extensively with entrepreneurs across the U.S. on strategic planning, goal setting, and experience sharing at the Entrepreneurs’ Organization.

Knowing my audience here of engineers, I am taking a more technical approach to successful goal setting (if you want more of this content plus the feel-good, motivational, positivity stuff, please visit our blog). These techniques are proven best practices that many successful achievers use to do great things. You can use these tactics to set personal goals, particularly New Year’s resolutions, and increase your chances of achievement.

Disclaimer: This is not for the faint of heart! This is for those that want to do meaningful, purposeful things in their lives. For those that want to live with intention. Following these steps will be thought provoking and require you to be introspective. You can do it!

Step 1: Start with personal core values. Do not skip this step! Personal core values serve as non-negotiable rules of the road for how to live your life. They act as a directional compass and a decision filter. Read more about this here.

Step 2: Visualize your future. I’m not just talking about the car you want to buy next year. You need to literally “see” your life in 3 years. Imagine for a moment that every decision you make over the next three years is the right one and everything goes your way. What would your life look like? Write this down in as much vivid detail as possible. This is a form of “priming” which is very critical to goal achievement.

Step 3: Align your values and your vision. Take a look at each core value you identified and then look at your vision. Are you living your values in 3 years? Are there any conflicts? This is a critical piece to personal happiness. Read more about alignment here.

Step 4: Define some goals that will move you toward your vision. Reflect on your vision and write down 5 things you could do in the next 3-9 months that will bring you one step closer to your vision.

Step 5: Ensure your goals are ARMeD. You may have heard of SMART goals, but I prefer ARMeD. Regardless of the acronym you use, be sure that your goals are Actionable (something you can act on), Relevant (to your core values and vision), Measurable (how will you specifically know when you’ve accomplished the goal? Hint: there should be some numbers or percentages involved), and Dated (give each goal a deadline).

Goal Execution Tips

Prioritize your goals by comparing them to each other,

Build a 30-60-90 day action plan that includes deadlines,

Write it all down and review it daily (seriously, review it daily – it’s part of “priming” – you’ve got to believe it to achieve it),

Reach out to your networks with a humble heart, not to brag about setting certain goals (the former ends in results, the latter ends in a false sense of accomplishment),

Recruit a challenge buddy to keep you accountable and push your boundaries,

Beat down the emotional obstacles (believe that you can and will achieve the goal – again, positive priming!),

Celebrate the small wins.

So there you have it. I somehow summed up a 5 hour goal setting workshop into one blog post. Should you need assistance or have questions, please contact me anytime at matt@velocitygoals.com.

Don’t just dream it, achieve it.
